After not having read Emily Dickinson’s writing for
a long
time, I picked up several books of her poetry and letters as well as
some critical essays on her
work... I was struck
by the potency, the economy of her style, and the relevance her words
have to a 21st century relationship with the
natural
world.
This body of work is a response to particular poems and lines
from letters of Dickinson’s in which she contemplates her agnosticism and carves out
her views on nature;
hence the titles for my pieces are excerpted from her poems and letters. I am also
trying to make the form in each piece reflect something about the poem or the line of hers from which
I am working. This is at
times a less than obvious component, but something that I am thinking
of, and it
shapes the work nonetheless.
The title This Whole Experiment of Green, is borrowed from the Dickinson poem A little Madness in Spring.
